Rwanda Strengthens Measures to Prevent Ebola Outbreak

Rwanda's Minister of Health, Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, has reassured citizens that no Ebola cases have been detected in the country despite ongoing outbreaks in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda. The Bundibugyo strain of Ebola has infected more than 1,000 people and caused over 200 deaths in the DRC, while Uganda has recorded nine cases and one death.

To prevent the virus from entering Rwanda, authorities have tightened screening measures at border crossings and Kigali International Airport. Foreign nationals who have recently been in the DRC are temporarily restricted from entering the country, while Rwandan citizens and legal residents returning from affected areas must undergo a 21-day monitoring or quarantine period.

Dr. Nsanzimana emphasized that Rwanda's main objective is to ensure Ebola does not reach the country. Although some individuals are being closely monitored by health officials, none have shown signs of infection. He also noted that the Bundibugyo strain is particularly concerning because it is difficult to detect and currently has no approved vaccine or treatment.

The Minister warned citizens against using illegal border routes, saying such actions could endanger both individuals and communities. He urged the public to cooperate with health authorities and remain vigilant.

While Rwanda continues to strengthen preventive measures, cross-border trade will not be halted. Instead, authorities are reducing the number of people crossing borders by allowing designated representatives to transport goods. Communities living near border areas have also been encouraged to help monitor and report suspected cases as Rwanda works to keep Ebola out of the country.
