As Rwanda joins the rest of the world to celebrate World Press Freedom Day 2026, the Synergy of Women Association in Media Rwanda convened journalists from across the country to reflect on the state of press freedom and promote a more inclusive media landscape.
The event focused on strengthening women’s voices in media, encouraging collaboration, and sharing ideas on how to build safer and more supportive newsrooms. Participants also discussed practical ways to advance gender equality within the media sector.
A highlight of the gathering was the recognition of three women media owners for their outstanding leadership, a move aimed at inspiring more women to take up decision-making roles in the industry.
In her opening remarks, Chairperson Doreen Umutesi emphasized the organization’s vision:
“Our mission is to build a media landscape that is not only free, but also inclusive, diverse, and empowering for all. Press freedom is about every citizen’s right to truthful information and a stronger democracy.”
Also speaking at the event, Rushingabigwi Jean Bosco highlighted ongoing efforts to develop Rwanda’s media sector while acknowledging persistent challenges such as financial constraints and gender-based violence. He underscored the role of the Rwanda Governance Board and the government in strengthening the sector and creating an enabling environment for journalists.
The event reaffirmed the importance of collective action in advancing press freedom, while ensuring that the media space in Rwanda continues to grow as a platform that is safe, inclusive, and representative of all voices.
