Gakenke: Police and RDF Planted 2,000 Agroforestry Trees to Support Community Welfare
Written by Noel Mporebuke
Security organs operating in Rwanda’s Northern Province have planted 2,000 agroforestry trees on 10 hectares of land in Kagano Model Village, located in Mwiyando Cell, Muzo Sector of Gakenke District.
Local residents were encouraged to protect and maintain the trees so they can benefit from them in the long term.
The activity was attended by regional army and police officials, as well as the Gakenke District Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs, Marie Thérèse Uwamahoro, who praised the contribution of security institutions to community development.
She stated: “We appreciate the positive impact you bring—not only in ensuring daily security, which is your primary duty, but also in supporting development initiatives that improve residents’ well-being.”
Uwamahoro emphasized that the district will continue working closely with citizens to protect the planted trees and safeguard other development projects.
Gakenke is among Rwanda’s districts with steep slopes and heavy rainfall, making tree-planting essential for reducing landslide risks and promoting environmental protection.
She added: “We will keep reminding residents about the importance of trees so that everyone develops the commitment to care for them. A time will come when we will all enjoy the benefits once they mature.”
Security officials also commended the community for their active role in maintaining local safety and urged them to continue strengthening collaboration with security organs. Participating in development and social welfare initiatives, they noted, enhances trust between citizens and security institutions.
This aligns with findings from a recent study by the Rwanda Governance Board (RGB), which reported that the Security and Safety pillar once again ranked highest, scoring 90.02% this year.
