Twelve Killed as Terror Attack Targets Jewish Festival at Bondi Beach
Written by Noel Mporebuke
At least 12 people have been killed and around 29 others injured in a mass shooting and terror attack during a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australian authorities confirmed Sunday.
The attack occurred on Sunday evening during the first night of Hanukkah, when hundreds of families and visitors had gathered for the “Chanukah by the Sea” event hosted near the iconic beach.
Two men armed with rifles opened fire on the crowd from a pedestrian bridge near Campbell Parade, prompting scenes of terror, panic, and people fleeing for safety. The gunmen reportedly fired dozens of shots. One attacker was shot dead by police at the scene. A second gunman was seriously injured and taken into custody. Authorities are investigating whether a third person may also have been involved.
Police also discovered improvised explosive devices in a vehicle linked to one of the suspects, though they were safely removed by bomb squad personnel.
Heroism Amid Horror
A local man, Ahmed el Ahmed, 43, has been widely hailed as a hero after he courageously tackled and disarmed one of the attackers, likely saving many lives. He sustained gunshot wounds to his arm and hand and is being treated in hospital.
At least 12 people were killed including one of the shooters and about 29 others were wounded in the assault. The injuries include those of police officers and civilians, with victims of all ages reported among the injured.
Emergency services, including paramedics and helicopters, worked through the evening to treat and evacuate the wounded to Sydney hospitals.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the attack as an antisemitic terrorist incident that targeted the Jewish community during a celebration of peace and faith. A national security meeting was convened Sunday night in response to the attack.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns described the violence as “designed to target Sydney’s Jewish community” and urged the public to support victims’ families and follow police guidance as investigations continue.
Context and Community Impact
Bondi Beach, one of Australia’s most famous coastal attractions, was filled with locals and tourists enjoying a warm summer evening when the attack struck. Many witnesses described chaotic scenes as people ran for cover.
The incident is one of the deadliest in Australia’s recent history and has drawn global condemnation from political leaders. It also adds to concerns about rising antisemitic violence in Australia over the past years.
