Rwanda and the United States Sign Landmark Peaceful Nuclear Energy Agreement

In a major step toward strengthening international cooperation and advancing sustainable development, Rwanda and the United States have signed a partnership agreement on the peaceful use of nuclear energy, known as the Nuclear Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding (NCMOU).

The agreement was signed on Tuesday in Kigali by Renee Sonderman, Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Arms Control, Deterrence, and Stability at the U.S. Department of State, and Dr. Usta Kaitesi, Rwanda’s Secretary of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

The deal reflects the growing trust and strong diplomatic relationship between the two nations. It aims to promote the peaceful use of nuclear technology in civilian sectors that directly benefit citizens, including healthcare, agriculture, scientific research, and the expansion of reliable and sustainable electricity generation.

Speaking after the signing ceremony, officials from both countries emphasized that peaceful nuclear energy can play a vital role in national development, particularly through innovation and the use of advanced technology to improve people’s quality of life.

Rwanda continues to demonstrate its commitment to collaborating with global partners in building expertise in modern science and technology. The agreement is also expected to create new opportunities for training, research, and investment in the nuclear energy sector.

Analysts say this cooperation could help Rwanda achieve its long-term goals of increasing electricity access and expanding technology-driven services while adhering to international safety and security standards.

The agreement marks another important milestone in Rwanda’s efforts to strengthen global partnerships and drive sustainable, knowledge-based economic growth.
