The academic leadership of the University of Goma (UNIGOM) has undergone major changes after Professor Muhindo Mughanda was officially relieved of his duties as Rector with immediate effect.
According to an official revocation notice shared by authorities, the decision was made in accordance with laws governing Higher Education, University, and Scientific Research. The statement also confirmed that all previous provisions contrary to the new decision have been repealed.

New documents released by Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC/M23) show that Professor Jean Baptiste Kakoma Sakatolo Zambeze has been appointed as the new Rector of the University of Goma.

The decision, signed on May 29, 2026, also announced other key appointments within the university administration, including:
- Professor Richard Kabuyanga Kabuseba as Academic Secretary General,
- Professor Nzabandora Ndimubanzi in charge of Research,
- Chef de Travaux Butotima Safari as Administrative Secretary General,
- and Chef de Travaux Paluku Malisawa as Budget Administrator.
The appointments were signed by AFC/M23 officials Bertrand Bisimwa and Corneille Nangaa Yobeluo in Goma, North Kivu.
The leadership changes have quickly attracted attention within academic and political circles in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
