Kagarama Marks the 32nd Commemoration of the Genocide Against the Tutsi

On Thursday, April 9, 2026, residents of Kagarama Sector in Kicukiro District gathered to commemorate the 32nd anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The event, held at the Kicukiro District gardens, brought together a large number of community members, local leaders, and guests who joined Rwandans in honoring the victims during this solemn period of remembrance.

The commemoration began with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Nyanza Genocide Memorial in Kicukiro, where over 96,000 victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi are laid to rest. This memorial stands as a powerful reminder of the tragic history, particularly of those who were killed at ETO Kicukiro after being abandoned by UN peacekeeping forces, as well as other victims whose remains continue to be discovered and given a dignified burial.

In her address, the Executive Secretary of Kagarama Sector, Uwamwiza M. Chantal, expressed gratitude to survivors who courageously shared their testimonies, helping others understand the depth of the tragedy. She extended her condolences to survivors, assuring them of continued support from the government in their journey toward healing and self-reliance.

“Commemoration is not only about mourning,” she said. “It is also a time to rebuild ourselves and look toward a better future. The Genocide against the Tutsi will never happen again, and it is our collective responsibility to prevent it.”

The event was also attended by various leaders, including Dr. Charles Murigande, who joined residents in paying tribute to the victims and emphasized the importance of unity and resilience in building a stronger nation.

Participants noted that remembrance plays a crucial role in helping them understand their history and continue the journey of recovery. They stressed the importance of educating young people about the truth of the genocide so they can become the foundation of a Rwanda free from division.
