Rwanda and Botswana Sign Landmark Agreements to Deepen Economic and Social Cooperation

On Wednesday, Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame and his Botswana counterpart Duma Boko presided over the signing of six major agreements aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations.

These newly signed agreements cover key areas including the avoidance of double taxation on goods and investments, visa waivers for selected passport holders, cooperation in air transport, healthcare, trade, economy, and investment. Together, they signal a shared commitment to building a stronger, more practical partnership focused on sustainable development.

In his remarks, President Boko emphasized that the visit was not merely ceremonial, but a meaningful step toward “realigning a shared vision” between the two countries. He highlighted Botswana’s strong interest in expanding cooperation with Rwanda, particularly in economic development sectors.

President Kagame, on his part, noted that Rwanda and Botswana’s relationship goes beyond friendship, resting instead on common goals and mutual ambition. He stressed that the agreements would ease trade, boost investment flows, and improve the livelihoods of citizens in both countries.

A notable highlight was the signing of a cooperation agreement between the Rwanda Development Board and the Botswana Investment and Trade Centre, aimed at promoting investment opportunities and simplifying cross-border business operations.

These agreements mark a significant milestone in Rwanda–Botswana relations, reflecting a shared determination to collaborate in advancing economic growth and creating new opportunities for their people.

Analysts believe this strengthened partnership could also contribute to boosting intra-African trade, supporting broader continental initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area.

Overall, President Kagame’s visit to Botswana is seen as a pivotal moment in building a results-driven partnership grounded in mutual benefit—demonstrating that collaboration remains a cornerstone of sustainable development in Africa.
