Night of Terror in Northwest Nigeria: Villages Raided, Dozens Dead

Zamfara State, Nigeria — February 21, 2026
A wave of violence swept through several rural villages in northwestern Nigeria’s Zamfara State Thursday night, leaving at least 50 people dead and dozens more abducted, according to local officials and residents. Heavily armed gunmen on motorcycles reportedly targeted homes indiscriminately, sparking panic and destruction in communities including Tungan Dutse. The attack began late Thursday evening and continued into the early hours of Friday, with assailants moving swiftly from house to house.
Survivors described scenes of chaos and terror. One villager who narrowly escaped with his family said, “We saw more than 150 motorcycles carrying armed men. We tried to alert the authorities, but no help arrived in time. Many of our neighbors were killed, and women and children were taken away. No one slept that night.” The residents’ accounts highlight the fear and devastation that has gripped the affected communities.
The Nigerian government condemned the attack and announced that additional troops and police units have been deployed to the area. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence said, “We are intensifying operations to locate the abducted persons and bring the perpetrators to justice.” Humanitarian organizations have also raised alarms, noting that such attacks displace thousands, disrupt farming and education, and exacerbate food insecurity in rural regions.
Zamfara State has long struggled with insecurity, with armed gangs — often called “bandits” — frequently raiding villages, killing civilians, abducting residents for ransom, and burning homes. Security analysts point to sparse security presence, difficult terrain, and economic hardship as key factors allowing these attacks to persist. Dr. Abdullahi Bello, a researcher on regional security issues, said, “Short-term military responses provide relief, but long-term solutions like governance reform, community policing, and economic development are essential to prevent recurring violence.”
Despite the tragedy, communities are trying to recover. Neighbors are helping families rebuild temporary shelters, and local leaders are coordinating with state authorities to account for missing residents. A village elder said, “We have lost so much, but we must remain strong and support each other.” This latest attack underscores the urgent need for comprehensive security measures to protect vulnerable populations in northwestern Nigeria and prevent further humanitarian crises.
