Collaboration as a Pillar of Development: Rwanda Marks Labour Day with a Vision for a Better Future

On May 1, 2026, Rwanda joined the rest of the world in celebrating International Labour Day, a day dedicated to recognizing the value of work and the critical role workers play in national development. This year’s theme, “Promoting skills development, job creation, and building a sustainable economy,” clearly reflected the idea that progress depends on strong collaboration across all sectors of society.

In messages delivered by various leaders, emphasis was placed on the importance of promoting decent work—jobs that respect labor laws and provide workers with security and hope for the future.

Minister of Labour Christine Nkulikiyinka highlighted the government’s continued commitment to expanding employment opportunities and improving job quality, ensuring that economic growth translates into better living standards for all citizens.

“Decent work respects the law, includes formal contracts, and provides security for the future. This is what we must continue to prioritize,” he stated. His message underscored Rwanda’s vision of building a structured, fair, and sustainable labor market.

In the education sector, Minister of Education Joseph Nsengiyumva emphasized the role of education in preparing young people for the demands of the labor market. He pointed to internship programs as a key bridge between education and employment, helping young people gain practical experience while enabling employers to identify skilled talent.

“Internships benefit both sides—young people gain skills and experience, while employers access a pool of capable workers,” he explained.

From the perspective of youth, Uwineza, a young entrepreneur, shared an inspiring message encouraging fellow young people to embrace any available work opportunity as a stepping stone. “Don’t be too selective at the beginning. The experience you gain opens doors to many greater opportunities,” she advised. Her words highlighted the importance of resilience, initiative, and entrepreneurship in shaping successful careers.

Economic analysts also noted that Rwanda’s investment-friendly policies and openness to foreign investors continue to strengthen the country’s economy. These efforts have contributed to job creation and increased productivity, reinforcing Rwanda’s reputation as an attractive destination for investment.

Particular focus was placed on youth as the driving force of the future. Equipping them with market-relevant skills is seen as essential for enabling them to compete globally and contribute to a sustainable, innovation-driven economy.

This year’s Labour Day celebrations delivered a powerful message: workers are the backbone of national development, and collaboration between government, the private sector, and citizens is key to achieving long-term progress.
