Future Military Leaders Trace Rwanda’s Liberation Struggle in Educational Study Tour

Students from the Rwanda Defence Force Command and Staff College (RDF CSC) have
embarked on a three-day study tour aimed at gaining a deeper understanding of the country’s
liberation struggle and the efforts that ended the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The tour, which began on April 22, 2026, kicked off at Kagitumba border post—widely
recognized as a significant starting point of the liberation war, where the Rwanda Patriotic Army
(RPA) launched its operations. At this historic site, students from Intake 14 engaged with senior
military officers, including generals, who shared firsthand insights on war planning, command
leadership, and the strategic decisions that led to victory.

The group, composed of 37 students from various countries across Africa and Asia, is visiting
key historical sites that shaped Rwanda’s journey to peace and stability. Among them is the
Campaign Against Genocide Museum, where participants are being guided through the critical
phases of the struggle for national liberation and security.

The study tour also includes a visit to the National Heroes Mausoleum, the final resting place of
Rwanda’s national heroes. Here, students reflect on the values of courage, sacrifice, and
patriotism that defined these figures—principles that continue to underpin Rwanda’s leadership
and development today.

Participants describe the tour as a vital learning experience, particularly for future military
leaders, as it bridges theoretical military training with real historical events. It offers them a
clearer sense of responsibility in safeguarding national security and preserving peace.
The leadership of RDF CSC notes that such study tours are designed to enrich students’
academic training by connecting it with practical historical context, ultimately shaping well-
rounded officers grounded in both professional competence and national values.

The tour will conclude on April 24, 2026, marking a significant step in preparing senior military
officers capable of addressing modern security challenges while upholding a deep commitment
to protecting their nations.
