Uganda Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Immigration, Over 200 Foreign Nationals Arrested
Written by Wilson Mukimbiri
Kampala, Uganda — Authorities in Uganda have arrested more than 200 foreign nationals in a sweeping operation targeting illegal immigrants and undocumented business activities, the Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed on Tuesday.
The crackdown, led by immigration enforcement teams, is part of an ongoing effort to address rising concerns over unlawful residency and unregulated commercial operations across the country. According to ministry spokesperson Simon Peter Mundeyi, the operation focused on individuals suspected of violating visa conditions, holding fraudulent work permits, or engaging in business activities without proper authorization.
A significant number of arrests were made at an apartment complex in Bukoto, a suburb of Kampala, where dozens of men and women were found residing without valid immigration documents. Officials say the location had become a hub for individuals operating outside the legal framework, prompting targeted surveillance and eventual enforcement action.
“We are committed to ensuring that all foreign nationals comply with Uganda’s immigration laws,” Mundeyi stated. “Those found in violation will face the full extent of the law, including possible deportation.”
Investigations are still ongoing, with authorities examining the extent of illegal business networks and the potential involvement of local collaborators. Officials have not yet disclosed the nationalities of those detained but indicated that more arrests could follow as the operation expands.
The government has reiterated its stance on maintaining strict immigration controls while encouraging lawful investment and business practices. Authorities are also urging landlords and business owners to verify the legal status of tenants and partners to avoid complicity in unlawful activities.
This latest operation signals a firm stance by Ugandan authorities as they seek to reinforce regulatory compliance and protect the integrity of the country’s labor and business environment.
